Katmandu Gold is the fifth game in ELK Studios' Gold series. It's also the first time ELK added a bonus buy option. They didn't play it safe either. Two buy options, including a 500x Super Bonus that starts with a 10x multiplier. That's bold for a first try.
I wanted to check this out because the Gold series has a good reputation. Avalanches, expanding rows, big symbols. Each game takes adventurer Kane to a new location. This time he's in Nepal, at the foot of the Himalayas, chasing temple gold instead of finding inner peace.
Here's what I found.

How It Looks
You're in Nepal. Himalayan mountains in the background. Buddhist inspired pillars on the sides. A massive oriental door hides the temple until you trigger the bonus.
ELK nailed the atmosphere. The view zooms in and out as rows get added or removed. You don't see the actual temple until free drops trigger. Then the door opens. Nice touch.
Kane, the series hero, shows up as the top paying symbol. He's supposedly here for inner peace but found gold instead. Classic Kane.
Base Game
You start with 6 reels and 4 rows. That's 4,096 ways to win.
Wins trigger avalanches. Winning symbols disappear. New ones drop in. A row gets added to the grid. This keeps going as long as you keep winning. The grid can grow up to 9 rows with 531,441 ways.
Symbols:
- Low pays: J, Q, K, A
- Mid pays: Earth, air, fire, water elements
- High pays: Turtles, tigers, dragons, Kane (2x to 4x for six of a kind)
- Wild: Substitutes for everything except bonus and Ice Climber
The 22.4% hit frequency keeps things moving. About 1 in 4 spins wins something.
Avalanches
Every win removes those symbols. Everything drops down. A new row appears at the top. The grid fills again. Keep winning, keep growing.
At 4 rows you have 4,096 ways. At 8 rows you have 262,144 ways. At 9 rows you hit 531,441 ways. The ninth row only appears through the Ice Climber feature.
Getting to 8 rows always feels good. Finding out there's a 9th row tucked away is even better.
Big Symbols
All symbols can land in big sizes. 2x2, 3x3, or 4x4. They fill all empty spaces underneath with the same symbol.
Big symbols can drop on any spin. When a 4x4 premium lands on an expanded grid, wins add up fast.
Ice Climber Feature
Look for the Yin and Yang looking symbol. Land 2 Ice Climbers and the feature triggers.
What happens:
- All symbols above the Ice Climbers become wilds or high pay symbols
- Empty positions beneath them turn wild
- If triggered on the 8th row, a 9th row gets added (531,441 ways)
This is how you reach max rows. The symbol transformation can create massive wins when it connects on a full grid.
Expanding Win Symbols
Some symbols land with gold arrows above, below, or both.
When these symbols are part of a win, they expand in the arrow direction. They replace everything in their path (except wilds, Ice Climbers, and bonus symbols).
A premium symbol with arrows on both sides can fill an entire row. On an expanded grid, that's a lot of matching symbols.
Multiplier Free Drops
Land 3 or more bonus symbols to trigger free drops.
| Bonus Symbols | Free Drops |
|---|---|
| 3 | 10 |
| 4 | 15 |
| 5 | 20 |
| 6 | 25 |
How the multiplier works:
- Starts at 1x
- Every bonus symbol marked with an X that lands increases the multiplier by +1
- Multiplier stays active for all remaining drops
- Bonus can be retriggered
The multiplier is persistent. It doesn't reset between spins. Building it up early means bigger wins later. This is where the 10,000x max win comes from.
Buy Bonus Options
ELK's first bonus buy. Two choices.
| Option | Cost | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Buy | 100x | 3 to 6 bonus symbols, 10 to 25 free drops, multiplier starts at 1x |
| Super Buy | 500x | 3 to 6 bonus symbols, 10 to 25 free drops, multiplier starts at 10x |
The 100x buy is standard for the industry. The 500x super buy is expensive. But starting at 10x multiplier means even early wins pay well. The multiplier can only go up from there.
500x is a lot. Handle it with care. But if you hit 6 bonus symbols on the buy and get 25 drops starting at 10x? That's serious potential.
If you like bonus buy slots, this was ELK's first and they went big.
Bankroll Advice
High volatility (7/10) with 10,000x max win.
Bring at least 200 to 300x your bet size. At €1 spins, that's €200 to €300. The 22.4% hit frequency keeps base game alive, but the real money is in free drops with a built up multiplier.
The 500x super buy needs extra caution. Only use it with a bankroll that can handle the loss if it doesn't connect.
Mobile
Works on any device. The expanding grid scales well. Visuals stay sharp. The zoom effect when rows change works smoothly on mobile.
Who Should Play This
Katmandu Gold works for you if:
- You like the Gold series
- Avalanche mechanics appeal to you
- Building multipliers during free spins sounds fun
- 531,441 ways at max rows excites you
- You want bonus buy options
- 10,000x max win is enough for you
Skip this if:
- 500x super buy is too risky
- You prefer safety net mechanics instead of multipliers
- Base game dead spins bother you
- You want higher max win potential
- Complex feature combinations feel overwhelming
What I Liked
- 10,000x max win is the highest in the Gold series
- Multiplier free drops build real momentum
- Ice Climber adds a surprise 9th row
- 531,441 ways at max expansion
- Two bonus buy options with different risk levels
- Great Himalayan atmosphere
- 22.4% hit frequency keeps base game active
What I Didn't Like
- 500x super buy is very expensive
- Can have dead spin stretches
- No safety level mechanic from other Gold games
- 10,000x might feel low compared to newer slots
- Expanding Win feature doesn't always connect
Final Verdict
Katmandu Gold is the best game in the Gold series so far. ELK took what worked in previous games and added a multiplier free drops system plus their first bonus buy feature.
The multiplier makes all the difference. Building it up during free drops and watching wins grow with each bonus symbol is satisfying. Starting at 10x with the super buy gives you a head start, but the price is steep.
Getting to 9 rows through Ice Climber and having 531,441 ways to win is where big things happen. Add a growing multiplier on top and you can see how 10,000x becomes possible.
The 500x super buy is aggressive for a first attempt at bonus buys. ELK didn't ease into it. That takes confidence in the game design.
Worth playing if you like avalanche slots with persistent multipliers. The Gold series has a formula that works, and Katmandu Gold is the strongest version of it.
My Rating: 4/5
Great atmosphere, solid multiplier mechanic, impressive 531,441 ways potential. The expensive super buy and occasional dead stretches keep it from a higher score. Best Gold game in the series.
